Choosing shocks for your 2007-2015 Jeep Wrangler JK

Posted by

The 2014 Wrangler JKs have been on the road for some time now, not many manufacturers have updated their information on fitment, hurry up Rancho & Skyjacker! Good thing some companies have verified for us that the shocks for 07-13 models continue to work for the 2014 models, thanks FOX / ProComp / Bilstein! We feel confident in all brands continuing their 07-13 shock line for the '14 model.
Update: 2015 JK Models extend the 07-14 years, to 07-15 on all shock fitments

FACTORY REPLACEMENT - Give me that buttery ride back!

If you're looking for a shock absorber to replace your worn out factory parts, there are a number of options to bring back that soft ride we know you miss. Typically stock shock dampers will last 40-50,000 miles before they start providing less control and road feedback. Bilstein 4600 is an entry level monotube shock, that is on the higher end of stock-replacement options, reserved for someone that knows they wont be off roading too often, and wants 100,000 miles out of their shock without issue. Rancho RS5000 and Skyjacker H7000 hydraulic powered shocks will work as replacements without breaking the wallet. But since these two models do not feature nitrogen gas, their use is usually limited to highway driving and towing because of the limited shock travel. If you're in an area with a lot of pot holes, we recommend staying away from hydraulic-only shocks. If you dont want to fuss with any guessing and want a straight replacement factory shock, go with Monroe or KYB.

MODERATE OFF-ROAD USE - I get my Jeep dirty sometimes

This is our most popular category, because who doesn't like getting dirty and kicking up sand every once in a while? If you're off-road just as much as you're on road, and still value a decent ride on the highway, we always recommend ProComp ES9000. Nitrogen gas charged means that when conditions start to get more aggressive, and you're speeding down the trail, these shocks will stay cool and controlled. We wouldn't be be true shock enthusiast if we didn't bring up the Bilstein 5100 Monotube shock absorber, the industry standard, the name you see in all the forums. "Guaranteed for the life of your vehicle" is the motto that Bilstein stands behind, and we've come to believe them through our own experience, and those of our customers. You will notice an immediate difference in ride quality, a bit firmer on the road, which translates to superior control over anything from the factory.

OFF-ROAD MONSTER - Commuting? What's that?

These shocks are for serious off road 4x4'rs, who want a dependable long lasting shock, perhaps rebuildable, that gives the best control available. FOX shocks have come out to challenge Bilstein's and King's shock domination, providing a range of options from smooth body IPF (internal reservoir) shocks, to full race coilover and external remote reservoir options. Fox Shocks are rebuildable as well (except Evolution series), so way down the line when you think you need a new set, you can send in your current set for repair and servicing, and get them back without blowing another few hundred dollars. Bilstein 5160 reservoir shocks deserve a mention here, and come with the dependability that Bilstein provides with their warranty and extensive experience in racing shock design. KING provides tried and true shocks meant for race applications, and they've brought that technology and R&D to the OEM space, giving a range of options for your Jeep. You cant go wrong with any of the options in this category, all 3 manufacturers have bullet proof warranties and products that we stand behind.
