Toyota Tacoma ICON RXT Suspension - Long Term Review

This is a long term ownership review, checking in after about 30k miles of having the stage 9 RXT kit from Icon Vehicle Dynamics on our 2006 Toyota Tacoma 4WD. The kit was initially installed in July of 2017, along with Frontrunner Roofracks, and an A.R.E Z-series bed camper shell - all in preparation for a week on the road and a week at Burning Man. Long term usability of the truck as a mobile base was our primary focus, since this truck will likely stay in the family forever. There’s 220,000 miles currently on the truck. Previous suspension experience...

Rebuilding Kings with SDI Universal Electronic Reservoirs

The future of suspension technology in the off-road, overlanding, and heavy duty space lies in systems that can adapt across a range of uses. Whether we’re overlanding or rock crawling our daily drivers, the suspension should be up to the task. Most shocks are tuned towards the middle of the curve, meaning the needs of most people and setups. Your out of the box shocks have compression and rebound valving profiles with a mix of comfort, handling, and high speed performance. There are always trade offs. When it comes to King, the dogma surrounding their shocks is comfort and high...

Shock Shakedown at King of the Hammers 2022

The Johnson Valley desert is as good as any to shake down some new vehicle upgrades, specifically 4 new suspension setups. But not the crazy race-setups on a lot of these rock crawlers and race-rigs. We’re talking basic upgrades for the everyday-driver-guy. Off the shelf, bolt-on-basics. Change the game with a few hundred dollars basic. We’ve been to this event a number of times, and each year it keeps getting bigger and bigger. One of the things we were most impressed with this year, which was brand new, is the FPV drone coverage of nearly every major Hammer obstacle, sometimes...

Pure 4x4 Basecamp 3.0 SoCal Recap

Basecamp 3.0 arrived in Big Bear with a bang! Over 300 vehicles showed up at Holcomb Ranch to get dirty, party, run trails, and talk shop. When we saw all the rigs rolling out of Tahoe from Basecamp 2.0 a few months back, we knew we couldn’t miss this one. People from all over the country showed up to Basecamp; Washington, Florida, the midwest, Norcal - “We dont have these mountains back east!” It was great putting faces to names; Baja Designs, VTX Wheels, Yotamafia, American Adventure Lab, Long Beach Overland, CORVA and a bunch of others. Wayne from Suspension...

Old Man Emu BP-51 Toyota 4Runner Installation

The installation of the Old Man Emu BP51 front coilovers and rear shocks are pretty straight forward. One part that may be slightly different from other brands, or non-reservoir setups, are the unique reservoir mounts in the OME kit. We’ve installed all sorts of reservoir shock setups on many different Toyotas, and no two reservoir mounts are the same. The front and rear mounting kits are also unique to the BP51 shocks, since the 2.8 inch bodies require special clearance requirements in the rear of the vehicle.
