Bilstein

Bilstein will be offering up a range of shock packages for the Bronco, we’ll specifically be testing the 5100s against the existing HOSS system, which we don't expect to surpass in performance or comfort. The 5100s are likely aimed at base models without the HOSS Bilstein dampers.

The 6100s from Bilstein will be a significant upgrade to the HOSS system, being a 2.5” shock that provides much greater overall support. The 6100s are going to handle similarly to the HOSS system on-road, but perform much better off-road.

Bilstein - 6100 Series

A new addition to Bilstein’s arsenal, the 6100 shock is equipped with a massive 60mm active piston and 2.6” shock body, providing exceptional off-road capability and handling. This shock is aimed solely at the adventurer, off-roader, and overlander that sees a lot of dirt, but also doesn’t want to sacrifice daily driver comfort.

How does the Bilstein HOSS compare?

On offer for every Badlands, Wildtrack, and Sasquatch package are Bilstein’s new HOSS dampers that give tighter road handling and more compliant off-road performance at moderate speeds. This system nets a little bit of lift height and ground clearance over the base level Bronco models, along with a tad more functional wheel travel.

The ESCV technology inside the HOSS Bilstein shocks prevents top & bottom-out through the addition of springs inside the shock to slow down and stop the active piston during extreme suspension forces.

Tire Fitment Under the Fender

Ford offers two flare options, but the actual fender opening is the same on all models — meaning flares (or lack thereof) are the only real variable for clearance.

  • 33x11.5 / 285/70/17: Fits any model below Badlands on an 8" wide wheel (+55mm or lower) or 8.5" wide (+35mm or lower) — 0.6" of lift recommended to be safe
  • 315/70/17 / 35x12.5: Base model needs ~1.15" lift, Badlands ~0.55" lift — 17x8.5 +35mm wheel with minor bump stop spacing
  • 37x12.5: ~3" lift on Base, ~2.5" on Badlands, ~2" on Sasquatch — some fender trimming likely needed, though some companies claim fitment on Sasquatch flares with just 2"
  • 37x13.5 / 39": Possible with a lower offset wheel (0mm) and the right lift, though fender cutting or replacement will be needed

Lifting Your Bronco - What You Actually Need

All four corners run coilovers from the factory, so lifting is straightforward — until geometry and drivetrain angles become a problem.

Front:

  • After ~2.5" (Base), 2" (Badlands), or 1.25" (Sasquatch), an aftermarket upper control arm is a good idea
  • Max recommended lift on stock front crossmember: 3.5" (Base), 3" (Badlands), 2.25–2.5" (Sasquatch)

Rear:

  • Stay under ~2" (Base), 1.5" (Badlands), or 1" (Sasquatch) before needing a track/panhard bar to keep the axle centered
  • Correct pinion angle with an upper or lower rear arm any time you're running coilovers capable of taller lifts — even if actual lift is minimal, protect that driveline at full droop
  • 3.5–4" is doable with the right arms; higher heights will likely require a track bar drop bracket
