Understanding the N3 Shock
The twin-tube shock problem in a nutshell is the lack of rebound damping, based off the small piston that you can't actually put any valving into to stop the chassis from sloppily rocking side to side.
To be fair to the N3: it dampens the truck and keeps the springs from bouncing uncontrolled. That's the baseline job of a shock, and it does that much. What it doesn't do is give you any confidence beyond that baseline; control over bigger hits, consistency once it's built up heat, or any real lifespan under hard use.
We haven't run a formal mileage test on the N3 ourselves, but the pattern across customer feedback and public forums is consistent: most owners see fade well before 50,000 miles, and sooner than that under regular off-road or towing use. Part of that comes down to the twin-tube design itself—twin-tube shocks are popular on budget kits because they're cheaper to mass-produce, not because the design is inherently bad.

Bilstein 5100: Confidence Through Control
The 5100 is available for factory height vehicles and up to 6" lift kits on many applications, as a direct replacement for the N3 shocks. In some instances, such as the 2001-2010 GM 2500 truck, Rough Country uses a bracket on the lower shock mount that changes the factory mount type—in which case there's a specific Bilstein shock to use (separate from the factory-spec one).
The digressive monotube design is where the difference presents itself. We call it "Confidence through Control." It fixes the sloppy, disconnected feel from the twin tube shocks that shows up over anything beyond a smooth surface: driveways, county roads, highway joints. Where the Rough Country N3 shock lets the truck 'wallow' around, the Bilstein 5100 keeps it controlled.
A higher center of gravity from a lifted truck on taller tires changes the suspension behavior that the shocks have to deal with. The digressive design of the 5100 is uniquely suited for this by producing more force on drive-inputs and under extra-loads.

Rancho RS9000XL: Adjustability for Every Situation
The RS9000XL is technically a tri-tube shock design, similar in principle to a twin-tube, but with an adjustable base valve and overflow canister for oil and gas that sets it in a different class. This shock comes in a 2.3in or 2.8in bore depending on application, which allows it to carry a ton of oil to dissipate heat under tough conditions.
The real value here is the range of adjustment. You can run it soft for the daily commute, or dial up the compression when hauling heavier loads, towing, or need more damping for off-road use. The Rough Country N3 can't touch the RS9000XL, as the Rancho shock produces the same amount of comfort, but far more oil and adjustability.
It's worth the premium price if you're the type of driver who doesn't mind getting under the truck and adapting the shocks to your weekend needs. If that's not you, then a more standard option like the Rancho RS7000MT may be better—their version of a monotube shock, but with a softer feel when compared against the Bilstein.

If you're tired of playing the budget game and want one of the best options for your lifted truck, the Fox 2.0 shock is a true entry point to higher-end performance without sacrificing daily driven comfort. Performance means traction, stability, and confidence off-road—that's what this shock was designed for. Expect a smoother feel over medium and larger bumps when in the dirt.
Throughout all our tests at Shock Surplus, we've found that the Fox 2.0 is one of the smoothest shocks we test across other options like Bilstein, Eibach, Icon, and higher-end 2.5 packages. We've done these tests back to back on Toyotas, Fords, and Chevys.
While 3x the price of the Rough Country N3 shock, these Fox 2.0 units produce far better handling on pavement with a smoother off-road feel in chunkier terrain. These shocks can also be rebuilt when the time comes for about $125 per shock (half the price or less of brand-new).

For lifted truck owners, the N3 shock leaves a lot to be desired. Does it dampen the truck and stop the springs from moving? Yes. Can it handle anything beyond that with any sort of confidence or longevity? Not compared to the shocks we usually test and recommend.
Twin-tube shocks have their place. They're typically more budget-friendly due to the design and internals, and frankly mass-produced overseas to achieve a cost target. But when you get to a well-designed twin-tube shock, you end up with great options like the Rancho RS9000XL or Old Man Emu Nitrocharger Sport shock, both in our recommendation lists depending on your vehicle application.
No, the Rough Country N3 shock cannot be rebuilt, and neither can the M1 monotube option. Frankly, we're not aware of any twin-tube shocks that can be serviced, and very few 2" monotube shocks can be serviced as well.
There are N3 shocks available for factory height trucks, so they're not limited to lifted applications.
We haven't done a specific mile-test on the Rough Country N3 shock, but according to a vast amount of customer feedback and public message boards, the shocks tend to last less than 50,000 miles, especially under hard use.
The Rancho RS9000XL is our go-to recommendation: a bigger piston (39mm), larger bore for more oil, and 9-stage adjustability for ride tuning. There are also numerous shock length options to accommodate lift kits up to 6 inches on most vehicles.
For lifted trucks, the Bilstein 5100 is so good and dependable, it's been our most recommended shock for most drivers. There aren't a lot of long-lasting and confidence-inspiring options for lifted trucks out there. When we say long-lasting, we mean 100,000 miles. Very few, if any, shocks can claim that kind of durability.
It's worth the premium if you're the type of driver that doesn't mind adjusting their shocks for excursions and truck duties. If that's not your jam, then the RS9000XL is overkill, and you may be better off in a monotube option that is on the softer side, like the RS7000MT.
