Bilstein 8112 DSA+ Bronco Review – Worth Every Penny

Tested on a 2021+ Ford Bronco, these aren’t your average bolt-on coilovers - they're built to push your rig, and your confidence, into territory you didn’t think possible without a long travel kit.

So are they worth the money? Let's dive into what makes the 8112 one of the most impressive shock packages we've ever tested.

What Makes the 8112 DSA+ Different?

The 8112s are Bilstein’s flagship, position-sensitive coilovers, designed to maximize control, comfort, and adjustability.

Core features:

  • 2.65” threaded body
  • 60mm main piston (massive for this class)
  • Internal zone-control tech (JCO + RCO)
  • 3 separate adjusters:
    • 10-position high-speed compression
    • 20-position low-speed compression
    • 10-position JCO (bottom-out control)

This is a true 5-zone shock absorber: 3 zones of compression (including JCO) and 2 on rebound (including RCO). The tuning window is huge - and that’s what separates these from pretty much everything else on the market. You don’t need to run them full soft or full stiff to get ideal ride quality. In fact, we found a near-perfect balance of performance and plushness without maxing out any setting.

JCO + RCO Explained

Unlike traditional internal or external bypass shocks, the 8112 uses hydraulic cutoff valves to create distinct ride zones:

  • JCO (Compression Cutoff): Engages during final inches of compression. Prevents bottom-out harshness.
  • RCO (Rebound Cutoff): Engages on full extension to prevent harsh top-out.

Think of this system like a hydraulic cushion. It lets the main 60mm piston do all the daily driving work while the JCO/RCO kick in during the gnarliest hits. The result is a shock that feels “bottomless” without sacrificing small-bump compliance.

Street Ride: Miata Handling Meets Raptor Comfort

The 8112s on the Bronco ride incredibly plush on pavement. Small road imperfections vanish, and even big driveways or sharp dips are handled without drama.

On-road test highlights:

  • No top-out or harsh bottoming - even at full-speed driveway entries
  • Zero detectable noise from JCO or RCO
  • Minimal body roll with excellent mid-corner control
  • No harsh transitions between ride zones

We dialed in low-speed compression at 10–11 clicks from full soft, high-speed at 4, and JCO at 3. That setting gave us cloud-like comfort over small bumps and precise control when cornering.

Low-Speed Trail Use: Predictable, Tunable, and Capable

In tight technical terrain, the 8112s surprised us. These shocks are known for high-speed performance - but we found they shine in low-speed articulation too, especially with the right setup.

  • Frame Twister Test: Plush, controlled articulation with almost no body roll. Minimal tire lift.
  • Hill Climb + Descent: Composure throughout steep drop-offs and rutted inclines. Cab remained flat, feedback was informative but not harsh.
  • Adjustability: Backed off low-speed compression and saw instant gains in softness without sacrificing vehicle control.

Even in sway-bar-on configurations, the 8112s delivered exceptional traction and poise.

Fast Dirt: Whoop-Smashing Confidence

This is where the 8112s earn their stripes. On our high-speed fire road and whoop section:

  • Smacked 2-foot-deep whoops at 55 mph with no tire lift, no drama
  • Cab stayed flat and composed - like a truck with 15” of travel
  • Felt like cheating - we couldn’t find the shocks’ limits before hitting our own

We cranked speeds up to 80 mph across chopped-up fire roads and the shocks soaked it all. No fade. No unpredictable behavior. Just pure composure.

Real Talk: Any Downsides?

A few, mostly tied to how much travel Bilstein built into these.

  • Limited Flex/Articulation: They're about the same length as stock Sasquatch dampers, which can limit flex in rock-crawling or slow-speed articulation zones.
  • Fitment with 37s: These are not ideal for clearing 37” tires without trimming or fender mods.
  • Lift Height: Designed for moderate lift. If you’re looking to max out ride height, these might not be your best option.
  • Price Tag: $5,600 sounds steep, but not when you consider what they do better than most $8,000+ long travel kits.

Long-Term Durability

Bilstein coated the 8112s in their EVO gray finish - similar to Cerakote - for enhanced corrosion resistance. The reservoirs are aluminum for cooling; bodies are mostly steel for strength. These shocks should hold up in wet, salty, or muddy conditions.

And based on our back-to-back abuse testing, they don’t just hold up, they beg for more.

Who Should Buy the Bilstein 8112 DSA+?

Ideal For:

  • Drivers who want track-level control with desert-level comfort
  • Fast off-roaders who demand predictability at speed
  • Weekend warriors with occasional trail abuse
  • Daily drivers who want Cadillac ride quality without giving up off-road performance
  • Anyone considering long travel but unwilling to hack up their Bronco

Not Ideal For:

  • Dedicated rock crawlers chasing max articulation
  • Anyone trying to fit 37s with zero trimming
  • Budget shoppers

Verdict: Are They Worth It?

We’ve tested just about everything - Fox 2.5/3.0, Icon CDEV, Kings - and these shocks changed our expectations for what’s possible with a bolt-on coilover.

  • Better than long travel for most people
  • Zero fade, even under heavy load
  • Massive adjustment range
  • Plush, communicative, and silent

You will need to upgrade other components if you're truly trying to find their limit. Steering components, axle housing, pivots - all may need reinforcement if you’re going full send. But for 99% of Bronco owners, these will never leave you wanting more.
