Best Bang for Buck? Bilstein 6112 vs Icon EXP vs OME MT64

Bilstein 6100s and 6112s have long been one of our favorite suspension options for the money. Being very well rounded and bringing the bang for the buck factor, this shock flies off the shelves and has a reputation to match. However, two similar shock options have recently entered the scene: the Icon 2.5 EXP and the OME MT64. Can the old faithful Bilsteins still keep up?

Each of these three shocks improve handling and ride quality over the stock suspension, but each caters to specific needs.

What's Similar?

Similar monotube design for consistent performance
Similar 60-64mm piston size for optimal control
Circlip adjustable for preload/ride height

Key Differences

Icon 2.5 EXP: Works with stock springs, offering lift and potentially more travel (better for rough terrain).
Bilstein 6100s/6112s: Designed for Bilstein springs. 6112 offers more lift and adjustability. Steel bodies are strong but harder to rebuild.
OME MT64s: Made for OME lifted springs. Include multiple height settings and a built-in bump stop for vehicles with extra weight. Aluminum bodies are lightweight but may not be as tough.

Who is Built to Last?

Icon & OME: Aluminum bodies with reinforced ends (lighter, resist rust, and better for heat dissipation, aka less fade).
Bilstein: Steel body (strongest).

Ride Feel

OME & Bilstein: Comfortable and durable rubber bushings.
Icon: Smoother-operating spherical bearings (may wear out faster and create more noise).

Maintenance

Icon: Needs service most often (around 40,000 miles) but easiest to fix.
Bilstein: Lasts a very long time, but rebuilding is difficult.
OME: Likely similar lifespan to Bilstein and can be rebuilt easily if seals become readily available.

Best Value?

Bilstein: Most affordable, especially considering springs are included.

Choosing the Right Shock

Hauling heavy loads: OME (designed for constant extra weight)
Fast off-road driving: Icon (tuned for aggressive handling)
Daily driving and occasional off-roading: Bilstein (good balance of performance and comfort)
