Introduction
After spending significant time testing a variety of suspension options on these trucks, we've learned enough to give you the tools to make the right decision before pulling the trigger on an upgrade. While we've got deeper dives coming on specific shock and coilover options, this guide covers the homework you need to do first—understanding what you've got and what actually works with it.
If you're looking to upgrade your Tundra's suspension, this is your starting point.
Factory Suspension Systems
Step one to knowing what to upgrade is knowing what you're starting with. These Tundras come with several different suspension options depending on trim level, and not all of them are equally upgrade-friendly. Let's break them down.
AVS (Adaptive Variable Suspension)
Most Platinums, many 1794 models, and some other trims come equipped with AVS paired with rear air ride. Here's the problem: both systems prevent you from running standard aftermarket shocks and coil springs in the rear without significant modifications.
You can delete these systems, but it costs money—and once you do, most people realize they didn't like how either system affected truck performance in the first place. If you've got AVS, factor in that deletion cost when budgeting for an upgrade.
TRD Sport
The Sport suspension is optimized for street performance and comes with some distinct characteristics:
- 1" lower front ride height than other models
- Fairly firm 46mm Bilstein monotubes
- Any coilover or strut will deliver roughly 1" more lift than on other models
This means stock height becomes difficult to achieve with an upgrade. Our recommendation: stick with 2" body monotubes or larger to avoid sacrificing the performance potential these stock Bilsteins already deliver. The factory shocks are legitimately good, so don't cheap out on the replacement.
TRD Off-Road
If you're planning suspension upgrades, this is the sweet-spot trim level. The TRD Off-Road gives you:
- 46mm Bilstein monotubes tuned softer than the Sport (off-road focused)
- Front end height matches base model and standard suspension
- Rear sits about 0.5" taller than other models
The payoff: upgrading with 2" body shocks or larger rarely requires sacrifices elsewhere. This is the path of least resistance for a good suspension build.
TRD Pro
Here's where things get interesting—and more demanding. The Pro comes with Fox 2.5" internal bypass shocks that perform remarkably well, which creates a high bar for any upgrade.
These shocks are position-sensitive, meaning they're tuned for a specific ride height. That sensitivity delivers exceptional small-bump compliance and bottom-out support—but it also means upgrading gets tricky.
If you have a Pro, look for:
- 2.5" or larger diameter body shocks
- Either position-sensitive (like Bilstein Black Hawks or OME BP51s) or electronically controlled options
- Fox 3.0, King 3.0, or Icon 3.0 shocks as solid upgrades
- Icon 2.5 CDEV or SDI reservoir setups for electronic control
- Dual-function options like Fox 3.2 Live Valve or Icon 3.0 CDEV for best results
The Pro sits 1.25"-1.75" taller in front than other trims (except Sport) but at the same rear height as Off-Road models.
Base Suspension
Base model Tundras come with basic twin-tube shocks—nothing special. The good news: just about any aftermarket option (except the cheapest OE replacements) will be an upgrade in at least some area.
In terms of ride height, base sits:
- 1" higher than Sport (front)
- 1.25"-1.75" lower than Pro (front)
- 0.5" lower than Pro and Off-Road (rear)
Hybrid Weight Considerations
Toyota uses the same front struts and coilovers for both i-Force and i-Force Max hybrid models, despite the weight difference. If a strut or coilover package isn't specifically engineered for hybrids, expect roughly 0.5" less lift than on gas models when using spring-based suspension.
Differential Drop & Axle Shafts
Here's the critical part that often gets overlooked: what axle shafts Toyota equipped your truck with. This determines the coilovers you can run without running into CV bind issues that require a differential drop or axle upgrade - and it matters more than you think.

Black Tripod CV Shafts (Base & TRD Sport)
Non-TRD models and TRD Sports come with black axle shafts featuring Tripod-style CV joints—the same design found on previous-gen Tacomas and 4Runners. The limitation: These joints only articulate about 23 degrees, and that range decreases as the suspension extends (plunge). The shafts are also on the short side. This puts a hard ceiling on how much more travel you can safely run than stock with the stock axle shafts and differential in the factory position.
Red Rzeppa Shafts (TRD Off-Road & Pro)
TRD Off-Road and Pro models get red axle shafts with Rzeppa joints—similar to previous-gen Tundras. These allow roughly 35 degrees of articulation, a significant step up from the black shafts.
They're still slightly short and have some spline engagement concerns, but they're far less limiting than the base model black shafts.
Silver TRD Lift Shafts (3" Lift Application)
Toyota offers silver shafts paired with their 3" TRD lifts. These use Rzeppa joints like the red shafts but with a longer shaft design, making them significantly stronger at the 3" lift mark.
Should You Upgrade or Run a Diff Drop?
Here's the critical issue: many coilover and strut packages are optimized for TRD models, which means base model black shafts will cause CV bind when the suspension extends.
The parts that are meant to work with the base axle shafts are also very limited in travel and are prone to topping out, with many having the same amount of travel as stock. In our, many such packages became nearly undrivable beyond 2" of lift in the front. So if you are looking for more than 1.5-2" of lift you are often best served not only with a diff drop, but seeking coilovers and struts that require them, as they will ride and perform a whole lot better than the alternatives.
Diff Drop vs. Shaft Upgrade: The Money Question
- Diff drop: $200-300 (the cheap route)
- Readylift shafts: ~$480
- TRD shafts: Up to $800
The Tundra uses a bracket-style diff drop (not the spacer style of older Toyotas), which avoids some classic issues—but not all. The TRD and most aftermarket skid plates won't clear a drop in their original position, so you'll need to space them out or modify them. That costs clearance, and clearance is the last place you want to give ground when the front crossmember gets close to the ground under compression.
Shaft upgrades don't sacrifice this clearance, making them the premium solution if maximum ground clearance matters to you.
Do you actually need this? If you have red shafts and you're running a longer-travel option, yes—upgrading to silver shafts or a diff drop gives you peace of mind. Big tires (35"+) and hard driving put serious leverage on the system. A wobble at the wrong moment under full extension could put the driveline in a bad spot, and a bad spot leads to catastrophic failure.

Track Bar Considerations
The factory track bar on these Tundras is actually reasonably well-designed. It's long enough to support at least 2" of lift without binding or the axle going much out of center, and so even with some lift the geometry is not terrible.
However, just like all stock bushings, the articulation is limited and the tendency to deflect is great. You do not see any limitation in travel when both rear wheels are doing the same thing, but when the rear needs to articulate, the stock bushings kill the fun. Additionally if you like to have some fun at speed off-road, you can expect the rear axle to have a little more side to side movement due to those bushings being so soft. If both rear wheels are moving in the same direction, you're fine. But during actual off-road articulation, the track bar limits how much one wheel can move independently of the other.
The verdict: You can skip upgrading if you're mostly cruising pavement. But if you spend real time off-road and care about articulation, upgrading the track bar is worth it. It genuinely improves articulation and stability.

Historically, rear links on Toyotas were the last thing you needed to worry about. These Tundras changed that. With the variety of high-travel rear shock options available, you need to think about rear link clearance.
Many of the longer-travel rear shock options we've tested have created two problems:
- Lower link bind: Limits strictly vertical travel on many shock packages
- Upper link contact: Longer-travel options cause upper links to contact various components under the truck
If you want to get the most out of anything beyond an entry-level or intermediate shock system, upper and lower link upgrades often become necessary. The good news: there are plenty of options from multiple brands.

What NOT to Do: Common Suspension Mistakes
Now let's talk about how to not upgrade your suspension. These options are appealing because they're relatively cheap—but they create real problems.
Perch Collar Lifts (The Biggest Mistake)
Perch collar or preload spacer lifts are probably the worst thing you can do to your Tundra's ride quality. They're better in terms of geometry than old-school spacer lifts, but that's a low bar.
How they work: They adjust the spring seat position to add preload—essentially extending the spring—without increasing shock travel. That means you're taking an already-underdamped strut and extending it further.
The result:
- Almost zero down-travel (droop)
- Significantly increased spring force
- Nowhere near enough rebound damping to control that force
Your suspension will be topping out constantly. We had a Tundra roll through the shop with a perch collar lift that had just over 1" of remaining down-travel. Our absolute minimum? 3 inches. That truck felt like a covered wagon on the road.
Manufacturers claim these kits have little effect on ride quality. We've tested them against even basic ride-height-adjustable struts, and we're here to tell you: that's marketing, not reality.
The value proposition is weak too. Many of these spacer kits cost the same or less than basic ride-height-adjustable struts like Bilstein 5100s—which actually improve both ride and performance.
The One Exception: TRD Pro
We get why Pro owners are tempted. A quality suspension upgrade is expensive, and the stock Fox 2.5 internal bypass shocks already perform really well.
But here's the catch: those shocks perform well because they're position-sensitive. The ride-quality bypass ports might only be 0.5" of wheel travel apart. Even a half-inch of lift pulls you out of that sweet spot. These kits provide way more lift than that, which quickly turns a killer-handling shock into something worse than the cheapest option you could bolt on.
That said, if you've added weight to the front (roof rack, winch, etc.) and you're sagging close to the bottom-out zone, a preload lift to get back to stock height is a reasonable band-aid until you can afford a proper upgrade.
Strut Spacer Lifts
Strut spacer lifts, where a spacer is installed outside the strut assembly to lift the front, are historically more popular on other applications. On Tundras with base model shafts, the axle shaft limitations make them problematic—but they're still the better compromise if you're committed to this path.
How they work: A spacer outside the assembly lifts without extending the strut, increasing overall assembly length. You avoid topping out because you're not losing droop travel at the strut itself—though CV bind might create the same effect elsewhere.
What you'll need:
- Up to 1" lift: Diff drop (base models) and sway bar drop (all models)
- Over 1" lift: Upper control arms as well
- At 3" lift: Pair diff drop with TRD shafts to manage CV bind risk
Done correctly, these lifts get you closer to stock-like ride quality than perch collars. But here's the thing: for the money you'll spend on all these supporting parts, you could buy a ride-height-adjustable strut that rides better, performs better, potentially works with all stock components, and probably costs the same or less.
