What "Best of the Best" Actually Means

Over the course of this Bronco Buyers Guide series, we've covered entry-level shocks that get you to the mall or down a fire road, intermediate options that provide modest performance at reasonable speeds, and high-end packages that go faster with better ride quality. The premium coilovers we're discussing today are in a different tier entirely.

Entry-level shocks get you there. Intermediate shocks get you there comfortably. High-end shocks get you there quickly. Premium coilovers get you further, faster, and with exponentially more comfort—and they'll survive impacts that would start breaking the rest of your Bronco.

Every coilover package we're covering today will absolutely outperform even the HOSS 3.0 Fox shocks mentioned in previous parts of this series. With that context established, let's talk shock.

ICON CDEV: Electronic Damping and Maximum Travel

The Technology: What CDEV Actually Is

CDEV stands for Compression Damping Electronic Valve. ICON's latest flagships are electronically controlled through their IIC (Icon Intelligent Control) module, which features onboard G-Force and Gyroscope sensors that gather suspension data 1,000 times per second. This data is interpolated and used to adjust compression tuning in under 40 milliseconds—essentially in real-time.

The result: the shock is constantly optimizing its feel to match what the suspension is doing, often predictively adjusting for what's coming next. You can choose between preset drive modes or fine-tune dozens of parameters directly from the cabin using the IIC App on your iPhone.

Travel and Tire Clearance Advantage

ICON CDEV shocks offer the most available travel on the market: 11.5 inches front, 14 inches rear. They also provide the best solution for fitting 37-inch tires. The kits are built around 35s, but ICON sells bump stop spacers in the exact height needed for 37s—and they install without disassembling the coilovers. Even with spacers installed, you retain more rear travel than Bilstein or Fox options.

The CDEV Philosophy: Non-Position-Sensitive Behavior

These shocks are not truly position-sensitive, and this is both a benefit and tradeoff. Because they're constantly adjusting based on real-time G and gyroscope data rather than physical position, they won't have quite the bottom-out support or small-bump compliance of position-sensitive alternatives. However, they gain exponentially better handling and stability, especially under load and when that load varies.

ICON addresses varying loads through a dedicated Tow/Haul setting and superior load stability via electronic adjustment. Since they don't punish you for sag variance, they maintain predictable, stable ride quality whether your Bronco is empty or loaded with 400+ pounds of gear. The base valving and spring rates are tuned for vehicles heavier than stock, and ICON offers kits pre-configured for heavy constant loads.

The Trade-Offs

The smartphone app is iPhone-only as of this writing—a significant limitation when approximately 70% of the global market uses Android. Some customers have solved this by purchasing refurbished iPhones specifically to store in their rigs, but that's suboptimal. An alternative path is pairing standard Icon Remote Reservoir coilovers with their SDI E-Click electronically controlled reservoirs, which use a standalone touchscreen control module mounted in the cab. This approach has a Bronco-specific harness and can pull additional vehicle data (wheel speed, steering angle, throttle/brake position) for better predictive performance.

ICON CDEV shocks have an estimated 40,000-mile service life for primarily street-driven vehicles—shorter than Bilstein or Fox. Bilstein 8112 Blackhawk DSA+: Durability Champion

Legendary Durability Meets Superior Support

Nothing lasts like a Bilstein. The 8112 Blackhawk offers the ultimate in bottom-out support and small-bump compliance that rivals linearly-valved shocks despite a digressive piston design. These shocks seem to defy physics with the speeds they handle and impacts they absorb off-road, and they're the last suspension component you'll likely service on your Bronco.

Performance Characteristics

During testing, the 8112s never felt short on travel during high-speed off-road driving. The super-soft front springs enable excellent articulation, and the rear end maintains impressive grip in technical terrain—though it does run slightly shorter on flex compared to ICON systems in extremely challenging situations.

The Bilstein's position-sensitive design provides excellent handling of individual bumps, with clear delineation between ride zones. The balance between small-bump compliance and large-bump support is exceptional.

The Noise Question

Bilsteins have a reputation for being "clunky," and there's some validity to this. Some users report gear-change or jounce-coil-over (JCO) engagement noise and RCO engagement clunk during flex.

Tire Fitment Challenge

The 8112s don't accommodate 37-inch tires without significant trimming or aftermarket fenders. For 35-inch tires, they're near-optimal; for anything larger, you're looking at body work. If maximum tire clearance matters, this is a notable limitation.

Service Life and Seals

Street-driven Bilstein 8112s often exceed 80,000–100,000 miles before requiring service, outperforming all other options. Most shock shops stock Bilstein seals on the shelf, ensuring faster rebuild turnaround compared to Icon or Fox alternatives. Bilstein usually keeps stock of their seal kits year round, so even if your local rebuilder does not regularly keep the necessary seal kits in stock, they are not hard to come by, ensuring at least similar rebuild times to that of the Icon or Fox alternatives.

Fox 3.0 FR IBP: Smooth Operation and Refinement

The Comfort Choice

Fox is the original pioneer of dual-speed compression adjusters in the off-road space, and decades of tuning expertise shows. The 3.0 FR series offers the best balance of handling and comfort without electronic systems. These shocks are perfect for buyers who want quietest operation, smoothest feel, and maximum comfort capability while retaining serious off-road prowess.

Built around 37-inch tires from the factory, the 3.0 FR includes tuning, ride heights, and geometry matched to that specification. This means you get maximum lift with minimal fender modification. Travel numbers are similar to Bilstein, but the seamless transitions between ride zones and softer overall character give it a more "cushioned" feel.

Performance Trade-Offs

The Fox 3.0 FR doesn't come with as much all-out support as the Bilsteins and won't quite last as long. However, it features more ride zones with smoother transitions, operates almost silently (addressing the Bilstein "noise" question), and delivers better comfort throughout the entire range—while still outlasting ICON options in service life.

Compared to ICON, these shocks won't match load-stability performance or handle load variance as gracefully. But for primarily street driving with weekend off-road use, this is a negligible concern.

Upgrades to Recent Production

Fox has recently reformulated their shock oil to include extra teflon impregnation, targeting reduced wear and extended service life. Street-driven Fox 3.0 FR shocks typically achieve 50,000+ miles before service. With the new oil formula, we're cautiously optimistic this could improve to around 60,000 miles—an acceptable upgrade.

Serviceability

Fox shocks are the easiest to service in the market. Almost every suspension shop stocks Fox seal kits, meaning fast rebuilds wherever you travel. Most shops can complete service lickety-split compared to Icon or Bilstein options.

Why Choose Fox 3.0 FR Over Others?

If you're prioritizing smooth, quiet, ultra-comfortable riding without accepting the maintenance interval of ICON or the occasional "clunk" of Bilstein, this is your option. It doesn't outperform everything in every metric, but it excels at refinement and won't leave you stranded for service anywhere in the country.

Fox 3.2 Live Valve: The Hybrid Solution

Position Sensitivity Meets Electronic Control

Fox's new 3.2 Live Valve series is for buyers who want both position sensitivity AND electronic control—without requiring a Raptor.

The 3.2 uses the same hardware architecture as the 3.0 FR series but adds patented Live Valve electronic control on top, which Fox markets as the most advanced and fastest-acting system on the market. Rather than copying ICON's approach, Fox implemented this correctly: a in-cabin control module with an interface superior to Icon's, plus way more adjustment parameters.

Control and Customization

Unlike ICON's iPhone-only limitation, Fox equipped the 3.2 Live Valve with apps for both Android and iOS—nobody is left out of the adjustment ecosystem. The system provides real-time telemetry, independent adjustment parameters for acceleration and braking, independent side control for cornering, internal bypass flow monitoring, and vertical G-force data logging with trip tracking.

Expected Performance

We haven't tested these systems yet, but we will be soon. Our expectation: you'll gain just that little bit of extra support everywhere—especially on bigger bumps—while improving overall handling and comfort compared to 3.0 FR. Essentially, the 3.2 Live Valve is the 3.0 FR's superior sibling with electronic predictive capability layered on top.
