Fox 2.5 Performance Elite Coilovers Installed on the 2022+ Toyota Tundra

Posted by Sean Reyes on

After putting the Old Man Emu MT64 suspension through its paces, we’ve officially pulled that setup off and moved on to something a bit more aggressive: the Fox 2.5 Performance Elite Series coilovers.

Who We Are

If you’re new here, we’re Shock Surplus, and we don’t just sell suspension, we actually test it.

Everything you see on our site gets run on our own vehicles, on real terrain, with real miles. That’s how we’re able to give you honest feedback and not just spec sheet comparisons or marketing speak.

This Tundra has already seen time on:

…and now, it’s time for the Fox 2.5 Performance Elite Series.

PSSSST... Also, we didn't run them ourselves but we installed the Dobinsons MRR setup on a Tundra and you can check out our installation guide on that one if you need it.

What Is the Fox 2.5 Performance Elite Series?

The Fox 2.5 Performance Elite is where things start getting into true high-performance suspension territory.

This isn’t just a comfort upgrade; it’s a control, durability, and tunability upgrade built off Fox’s off-road racing platform.

Key Features

  • 2.5” shock body for increased oil volume and heat dissipation
  • External reservoir for consistent performance under repeated hits
  • Dual Speed Compression (DSC) adjusters
    • Low-speed: body control, braking dive, cornering
    • High-speed: big hits, whoops, rough terrain
  • Vehicle-specific valving and springs
  • Fully rebuildable design

The larger shock body and reservoir allow for more oil and better heat management, which helps maintain consistent damping over long rough sections and repeated impacts.

What Ride Quality Can You Expect?

We haven’t published the full review yet but we know what these are designed to deliver, and what we typically see from this platform.

On-Road

  • Firmer than entry-level shocks
  • Much more controlled
  • Reduced nose dive and body roll
  • Stable at speed

Off-Road

  • Soaks up repeated hits without fading
  • Handles washboard and whoops with confidence
  • Better composure at higher speeds
  • More forgiving when pushing the truck hard

Compared to smaller shocks, the 2.5 platform provides greater damping capacity and control, especially under load or in rough terrain.

Fox 2.5 vs Old Man Emu MT64 (What We Expect)

This is the big transition on this truck and it’s a meaningful one.

Old Man Emu MT64

  • More “set it and forget it”
  • Tuned for balanced comfort + load support
  • Great for overlanding and daily driving
  • Simpler, no external adjustability

Fox 2.5 Performance Elite

  • More performance-focused
  • Fully tunable with DSC adjusters
  • Handles higher speeds and bigger impacts better
  • More headroom for aggressive driving

The Real Difference

If the MT64 is a well-balanced all-around setup, the Fox 2.5 is a precision tool.

You’re trading some simplicity for:

  • More adjustability
  • More capability
  • More performance ceiling

And that’s exactly what we’re looking to test next.

What This Install Means for the Next Video

This install is just step one.

Next up, we’ll be putting the Fox 2.5 Performance Elite through our usual paces, testing it on the street and giving it hell off-road, and we'll report back with a full review, so make sure to subscribe over on the Shock Surplus YouTube Channel.

We’ll answer the big questions:

  • Is it worth the jump from mid-tier kits?
  • How does it compare to ICON EXP, Bilstein, and the other setups we've tested?
  • When does it actually make sense to use for your build?

Still Deciding on a Tundra Suspension?

We’ve already tested a few other setups on this same truck—so if you’re still figuring out what’s right for you, check these out:

Each one is right for a different type of driver and we’ve got real-world testing on all of them.

Final Thoughts

The Fox 2.5 Performance Elite isn’t for everyone—but if you’re looking for:

  • More control
  • More speed off-road
  • More tuning capability

…it’s one of the most proven platforms out there.

We’ve got it installed, and now it’s time to see what it can really do.
