That valving gives real off-road response and less slop than a softer shock, but there's still a lot left on the table in genuinely rough terrain.
It depends on how you use the truck. Much of the poor highway ride comes from an unladen rear leaf-spring end, while the factory front struts are relatively soft and show up as body roll. Empty-bed daily drivers usually feel it in the rear first; weekend haulers and overlanders should budget for both ends. We test and show the actual difference each upgrade makes rather than guessing.

Yes. The AT4 and non-AT4 Sierras share the same shocks, and only the springs differ for the AT4's +2" lift. Replace just the shocks and transfer your factory springs over, and the truck stays at exactly the same ride height it is now.
A great set of four replacement monotube shocks starts around $500–$600 for Bilsteins. Cheaper options exist, and we steer customers away from them. A shock that needs to be replaced again before 60,000 miles isn't actually cheaper, it's just deferred spending. Labor on a direct replacement runs about 3–4 hours in most shops.
They're not the softest shock on the block, and that's part of the appeal: confidence through control. We'd call Bilstein the sportiest, tightest-response option in this lineup, great for heavy trucks that feel sloppy or wallowy on stock shocks. Want something softer with the same reliability? Look at Eibach instead.
Height-adjustable shocks like the Eibach Pro-Truck, Bilstein 5100, and Fox 2.0 Snap Ring all reuse your factory springs and can add up to 2" more lift from where the truck sits now. Push that adjustment to its max, and take a hard look at your upper control arms. The factory arms can bind or run out of range at that height, and a UCA upgrade is worth budgeting for alongside the shocks.
Straight answer: the empty-bed rough ride is nearly impossible to fully solve, because leaf springs aren't moving enough under no load to let the shocks actually do their job. That's a spring limitation, not just a shock limitation. What we have found is that the Eibach Pro-Truck and Fox 2.0 both run valving profiles that feel noticeably more forgiving empty-bed than stock. If you're regularly loaded down or towing, weigh that against the Bilstein 5100's control under load.
Nothing's wrong with the factory Rancho monotubes for what they are. But you also wouldn't take the parts-counter pocketknife to the backcountry. Performance shocks in the higher end of this range (Fox 2.5 Performance Elite, Fox 3.0, King, Icon) buy you real handling and control in faster dirt environments, meaning your truck stays composed when driving fast over rough or bumpy terrain instead of packing up and bouncing off-line.

On these bigger trucks, the Shock Surplus staff typically prefers a 2.5-inch shock for the added support for daily duties. But that doesn't mean you have to go full race-level shock with reservoirs, often those are overkill. If you're seeing real dirt on weekends and want more capability without going overboard, step up to the Fox 2.5 IFP or Performance Elite. And if you're chasing the highest ceiling regardless of cost (King, Icon, or Fox 3.0 territory), you already know it, and none of the direct-replacement options in this guide are going to satisfy you anyway.
